Teenage pregnancy education at a secondary school/nursing school in Buea, Cameroon. 2017, 2018

Despite efforts to address the issue, many Cameroonian secondary schools continue to see an alarming number of teen pregnancies and the prevalence of unsafe abortions among this demographic. I led a group of volunteers’ interactive conversation with a few students, and it was fascinating to hear not only their stories but also their fears of social stigma if they spoke about such sensitive subjects. What a revelation! It’s clear that we need more secure areas to have these kinds of discussions. We must prioritise the enrollment and retention of our girls in school. This workshop couldn’t have come at a better time, as countless young girls have tragically lost their lives as a result of unsafe abortions that were attempted to end unwanted pregnancies.
